Clients with a strong bite, sensory sensitivity or poor oral control can hurt themselves on ordinary metal cutlery. Plastisol coated cutlery puts a soft, food safe coating over the bowl of the spoon so teeth, gums and lips are protected during a meal.
It also makes mealtimes easier to supervise. A speech pathologist or support worker can focus on pacing and positioning, not on watching for contact injuries, and the coating gives a softer sensory cue in the mouth for clients who flinch from cold metal.
The coating is not designed for clients with severe biting reflexes, so check suitability before it goes into a mealtime plan. Everything else about it is ordinary cutlery, and it sits in a drawer with the rest of the household’s utensils.
Note that this product contains natural rubber latex.
