Who it suits
The TRAM frame suits clients who can bear some weight but cannot reliably get themselves from sitting to standing: adults after stroke or brain injury, people with incomplete spinal cord injury, post operative patients being mobilised early, and older clients losing the sit to stand they used to have.
It does three jobs in one unit. It lifts a client from sitting to standing on a natural body arc. It supports them for walking, with the pelvic support taking away the fear of falling so they can put their attention on the stepping. And it performs a seated transfer with the client low, comfortable and in eye contact with the person helping them, which is not how most transfers feel.
The client is secured by two back belts with safety buckles, so preparing for a transfer is quick enough to do several times a day. The frame is compact and manoeuvres in bathrooms and bedrooms, and it is light enough to move between rooms or into a car. Multiple carers can be trained on it without much fuss, and it takes a good deal of load off their backs.
