Bowls is one of the few sports a wheelchair user can take up at any age and keep playing for decades, socially or competitively. This Melrose chair is built for the green and built to the individual, with size, rake and camber set to the player rather than picked off a shelf.
The details are all about the delivery. A low ride height puts the player closer to the green, and wide castor positions give the feet room to clear the castor wheels. Bowls holders mount above the chair as shown or underneath, whichever suits the player’s reach. If more clearance is needed on the bowling side, the castors and main wheel can be offset to create it. Footplate style and height are chosen, back height is adjustable on the fixed frame, and the rear wheels are quick release for transport to the club.
It is built to comply with New Zealand Bowls regulations for wheelchairs on the green. Australian clubs set their own conditions, so check with your club and greenkeeper before you play. Beyond that, if a player can describe something that would improve their game, Melrose can usually build it.
