The U shape is the point of it. There are several grip points along the rail, so the client can take hold wherever suits the movement they are making, whether that is pulling up to sitting, rolling over or standing from the edge of the bed. The slim profile keeps it close to the mattress, near enough to reach lying down but still out of the way when a carer needs to work at the bedside or bring in a transfer.
It is a common addition for clients who are still mobile but unsteady on rising, and for rooms where a full-length rail would be more restrictive than the client needs. The charcoal finish keeps it looking like part of the bed rather than an add-on.
