For a client with low trunk control, the difference between a safe sit and a constant hold from the carer is upper body support. The butterfly harness gives that. It replaces the centre section of the HTS seatbelt and brings shoulder straps up to clip into sockets on the backrest.
The seatbelt portion is tightened first, then the upper straps, which keeps the pelvis anchored before the chest is held. Fit is checked after every adjustment. For smaller clients the backrest is brought down to shoulder height so the straps pull in the right line.
Once it is on, the carer can step back from holding and get on with the hygiene task.
