Feet that will not stay on the footplates are more than a nuisance. A foot that slips off drags, catches and takes skin with it, and it costs the client the stable base they need to sit upright. Spex Foot-Fast Ankle Stabilisers are padded, contoured wraps that hold each foot on the footplate without clamping down on the ankle bone.
Each wrap closes with a buckle and the strap tension is adjustable, so the hold can be firm where tone is strong and eased off where it is not. Three sizes cover most adult and paediatric ankles, measured around the ankle at the height of the pad. The footplate attachment hardware comes with them, and a version with a posterior retainer strap can be ordered for a client whose heels lift out of the wrap.
They suit a client whose feet come off the plates because of extensor spasm, dystonia or reduced awareness. They hold the ankle rather than the shoe, and they need skin over the ankle bones that will tolerate a padded wrap.
Good to know
- Measure ankle circumference over the sock at the ankle bone before ordering
- Fits most standard footplates; check the footplate has a flat area for the hardware
- Prescribe with an OT or physio, and review strap tension as tone changes
