Standard armrests sit where the chair manufacturer put them, which is rarely where a client with an affected arm needs them. The Spex Angle-Adjust Arm Support is the hardware that fixes that: height adjusts steplessly from the seat base, and the pad tilts to raise or lower the forearm, so the arm can be supported at the position an assessment calls for instead of the position the chair offers.
Three mechanisms are available. Fixed is the simplest, swing-down clears the way for a side transfer, and quick-release lifts the whole support off for a transfer or for loading the chair into a car. Each comes as a seat pan mount under the seat or a seat rail mount to the frame rail, left or right. The hardware is modular, so it works with Spex trays, powerchair controller mounts and lateral thigh supports on the same mount. Arm pads are ordered separately in slim or wide types, with a wooden base, layered foam and a removable neoprene cover.
Who it suits
A client in a manual or power wheelchair, often with a Spex seating system, who needs an arm support positioned above or angled differently from the chair’s standard armrest: a hemiplegic arm that needs to sit higher and rotated inward, shoulder subluxation, or a client who props to hold trunk position. Swing-down suits a client who does side transfers; quick-release suits a client whose chair is folded or lifted into a car. A client who only needs a standard armrest at standard height does not need this hardware.
