Lifting a client’s legs back onto the bed is one of the transfers carers do badly, usually by bending over the bed and lifting with the back. The same applies to bringing someone up from lying to sitting when they cannot push through their arms.
A back and leg raiser gives carers handles and a supporting surface so the legs can be lifted together and the upper body raised in a controlled way. It keeps the carer upright and closer to the load, and it keeps the client supported through the movement and not pulled by a limb.
It suits a client who can help a little but not enough to complete the move, and it fits into a handling plan alongside slide sheets for the in bed repositioning. Two carers can use it together where the client is heavier or where tone makes the movement unpredictable.
