Sheepskin is still specified for clients at risk of pressure injury or already managing early skin breakdown, and these Shear Comfort overlays are the medical version rather than a comfort product. Real wool on a natural leather backing spreads load across a wider area and cuts shear at the skin surface.
The wool holds a good deal of water vapour before it feels damp, and traps air between the fibres. In practice the surface stays drier and closer to a stable temperature than a synthetic cover, which is what a client who perspires or spends long periods seated notices first.
They are made to Australian Standard AS4480.1 for medical sheepskins and washed in a domestic or facility machine at high temperature with a wool wash product. Sizes run from paediatric through to king single, and because the skins are natural the finished sizes vary slightly.
