Getting socks on is one of the first things to go after a hip or knee replacement, and it is often the task that decides whether a client can dress themselves at all. The Foxy sock aid is the simple answer: a curved plastic shell with two pull cords. Your client stretches the sock over the shell, drops it on the floor in front of the foot, slides the toes in and pulls both cords to draw the sock up the leg.
It works from a chair or the edge of the bed, so there is no bending to the foot and no breach of hip precautions. Because the shell is rigid it holds the sock open on its own, which makes it easier to load than a fabric aid for a client who has grip but not much dexterity. The cords are long enough for someone with limited reach, and the whole thing wipes clean and needs no setting up.
It suits a client with reduced hip flexion, back pain or post-surgical precautions who can hold a cord and pull. For compression stockings, or for a client who finds the rigid shell uncomfortable against the foot, a fabric aid such as the Etac Socky is the better match.
