The Excel Paediatric Self Propelling Wheelchair is a folding aluminium chair scaled down for children and small adults who push themselves. It suits a school age child with good arm function and sitting balance: a child with spina bifida, a lower limb condition or a neuromuscular disease who needs one chair for school, home and getting out.
Two seat widths cover a good span of growth, and the backrest and push handles adjust in height so the chair can be tuned as the child gets taller rather than replaced. The belt backrest has adjustable tension, which gives a basic contour to sit against without adding a seating system. Upholstery comes off and washes, which anyone who has dealt with a school lunch on a chair will appreciate.
For the carer, the aluminium frame keeps it light to lift, the rear wheels come off with quick release axles, and the chair folds narrow for a car boot. Flip-back padded armrests make side transfers easier and the swing-away legrests clear the footplates for standing transfers. The belt backrest gives contour only: a child who needs postural support, tilt or a growing seating system should be assessed for a paediatric positioning wheelchair or an R82 or Etac frame instead.
