In a home or facility where one hoist covers every transfer, battery condition decides whether that hoist is available when it is needed. An ageing battery tends to show up first in the afternoon, when the lifts have added up and the remaining charge will not complete a move. Keeping a second battery on the shelf means a flat one can be swapped out and charged while transfers continue.
