Postural care decisions are easier to defend when they rest on measurement, not impression. The Anatomical Measuring Instrument is the tool Simple Stuff Works use to record the Goldsmith Indices of Body Symmetry, a validated, objective set of measurements of body shape.
With it you can record chest shape, the capacity of the thorax and abdomen, and rotation through the pelvis and legs, then repeat the same measures later. That gives you a baseline at the start of a positioning programme and a way of showing whether the programme is holding or whether body shape is still changing.
It is a clinician’s tool, used as part of assessment and review, and the numbers it produces feed directly into a therapeutic positioning plan and into reporting for funding.
