For a client with a serious wound, or one who simply cannot be turned safely, the Dolphin simulates immersion in fluid, so the body settles into the surface at close to neutral buoyancy and the load spreads across it, easing the bony points.
Because the surface deforms around the person, tissue distortion and shear are both reduced and blood flow through the loaded area stays closer to normal. That is why it turns up in complex wound cases, post operative care and palliative settings where repositioning is painful or contraindicated.
It fits existing bed frames, including bariatric frames, and it holds therapy through a transfer on battery, so the client is not dropped onto an ordinary surface the moment the bed moves.
