Skin that sits against a vinyl seat all day gets hot, damp and sore. The Shear Comfort Cushion-It is a medical grade sheepskin pad that goes over the seat or back the client already uses, so the surface against the skin changes without changing the cushion underneath.
The high density wool pile traps air, so heat and moisture move away rather than build up. Wool also takes up a good deal of moisture vapour before it feels damp, which is why it still gets specified for clients who perspire or sit for long stretches. Adjustable hook and loop straps hold it in place on a wheelchair, armchair, office chair or car seat, and the fabric backed base stops it creeping. It washes at high temperature, which matters where infection control is part of the picture.
It reduces friction and shear at the skin surface but it is not a pressure redistribution cushion on its own. A client at medium or high pressure injury risk needs a foam, gel or air cushion underneath it, and the pad can sit on top of that.
