Some clients cannot hold their head in midline comfortably when lying down, whether from weakness, tone, pain or after surgery. A neck support roll gives the head and neck something to rest into so the position is held without the person working for it.
It is a firm roll that sits in the curve of the neck and takes the weight of the head, which can settle a client who is restless at night and makes a real difference to comfort during longer periods in bed. It can also be used to support a limb or to fill a gap when a person is positioned on their side.
The cover wipes down, which suits a bed where hygiene management is part of the care plan. As with any positioning aid it should be reviewed by the prescribing therapist once it is in place, because the right position on paper is not always the position the client settles into.
