If your client slides sideways in the Heron once they relax into the seat, fixed side supports give the trunk a firm boundary on both sides. They bolt to the backrest and stay where you set them, so the position you establish at fitting is the position the client gets every session, whoever is on shift.
They are fixed in place, so they suit a client who transfers with a hoist or with good standing tolerance, where clearance at the side of the seat is not the limiting factor. That keeps the chair low profile, with fewer moving parts to check and nothing to unlatch during a wash.
