For a client with very little hand function, holding cutlery is the barrier to eating independently, not the eating itself. The Quad Care Cuff takes the grip out of the task.
The cuff straps around the hand and holds a utensil in a sewn pocket, with a built up palm block that keeps the hand in a functional position. Almost no grip strength is needed, so clients with high level spinal cord injury, advanced neurological conditions or severe hand weakness can bring food to the mouth using shoulder and elbow movement.
A carer or family member can fit it in a few seconds at the start of a meal and take it off afterwards, which keeps mealtimes moving in busy households and supported accommodation. Because the utensil slides into a pocket, the client’s own cutlery can often be used.
