The Spex Drop Mount is the hardware that attaches a back support to the back canes of a manual wheelchair. Clamp and mechanism are one combined unit: the back support drops in from above and lifts straight out, and the release works with one hand. For a client who takes the back off to fold the chair into a car boot, that single movement is the difference between a chair that gets used and one that stays home.
It is lighter than the multi-point mounts, which suits an active ultralight frame where every gram is argued over, and it still gives useful angle adjustment forward and rearward so the seat to back angle can be tuned at fitting. Width and depth adjustment vary with the size chosen. It is crash tested and transport certified, so a client who travels seated in a vehicle is covered.
Prescribe it with any Spex back support, Zygo, Contour, Classic and the rest of the range. For a heavy-duty or high-tone client, or a back that will be adjusted often, the Spex Quad Mount gives more adjustment and a higher rating.
Good to know
- Choose the size to match the back support size, not the user; ask us if you are unsure which size fits a given back shell
- Sold as hardware only; the back support shell and cover are separate
- Compatible with Spex Zygo back supports at plus or minus 50 mm of wheelchair width, and with other Spex backs over a narrower range that varies by size
- Fitting and set-up by a technician is recommended so the angle and depth are locked correctly
