The argument for the OptiCell SMART R8 is that it sets itself. The OC55 pump senses the client’s weight and the position of the bed and adjusts pressure automatically, so a carer is never asked to dial in a weight or remember to change a setting after the backrest goes up. Settings survive a power failure and the system returns to normal mode on its own after nursing mode, which removes the most common way a mattress quietly stops doing its job.
Clinically it gives you two things. Any cell can be decoupled anywhere on the surface to offload a specific wound, a heel or the sacrum, and cells are individually replaceable, so damage does not write off the mattress. Micro air loss moves air through the surface to help manage heat and moisture against the skin. The OptiTex four-way stretch cover is water resistant, vapour permeable and fire rated, and unzips for laundering. The pump is quiet enough for a bedroom.
Specify it for a client who is bed-bound or spends long periods in bed with an existing injury or a very high risk score, particularly where the care team changes often.
